The whole club counts down to 1927, the confetti comes down and Gus Valentine never shows up for the toast.
And he's upstairs behind a locked office door, shot once at his desk.
It's New Year's Eve, 1926, at the Black Orchid, a speakeasy hiding under a flower shop on West 52nd Street. His wife finds him at 12:15. The office clock lies smashed on the floor, stopped at 11:45, which hands a few people a suspiciously tidy alibi.
Your guests play the suspects, starting with his wife and the torch singer he was cheating with. Then there's his piano player, a beat cop who drinks for free and a few more who'd rather you didn't ask.
The three rounds follow a starter, a main and dessert, so the whole thing runs right through a dinner party. Roles are written as women and men, and anyone can play any part. Honestly, it's the best way we know to make it to midnight.
